More than a hundred employees of the Slovak National Gallery (SNG) are resigning. Leaving the institution is in response to the actions of the temporary general director of SNG Jaroslav Niňaj, his predecessors and the inaction of the Ministry of Culture. The initiators of the mass call for the protection of the institution informed about it at the press conference on Monday.

“Over the past almost six months, the post of director of SNG has been replaced by three people whose competences, interests and experience do not correspond to the position of the statutory head of the top fundraising institution,” stated Klára Hudáková. She described the current temporary head of SNG and his predecessors as ignorant of regulations, rules and lawswhich affect the practical operation of the gallery, financing, labor-legal relations or presentation at home and abroad.

According to Hudáková, domestic and foreign institutions, artists and experts want to cooperate with SNG less and less. “Foreign museums are no longer afraid to lend us their works, the problem is also that the long-term partners who supported us financially until now have withdrawn their support,” declared and identified as problematic i Ninja’s communication with employees or unreasonable delay in the administration of processes and projects.

“We do not see our statements as an expression of a civil attitude, but a clear warning that the collapse of the institution has begun and we refuse to participate in it,” declared Hudáková, stating that department directors and rank-and-file employees are no longer willing to work in an environment “where laws are broken, basic principles of governance are ignored public institution, it is doubtful handles public finances and where experienced experts become a victim of expedient decisions”.

The initiators underline that the most fundamental problems of SNG are changes in the organizational structure, illegal procedures in the creation of new employment contracts or the collapse of the exhibition plan for 2025. From April, according to Zuzana Dzurdzíková, they will stop operate digital services and the SNG bookstorethe activity is supposed to be endangered art library, they are also supposed to be weakened by the departure of employees educational and accompanying programs or visitor service.
