The British Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that it imposes sanctions on six people and three companies from Belarus in response to the weekend presidential election in which Alexander Lukashenko won for the seventh time. TASR writes about this, according to AFP and Reuters reports.

“After Lukashenko’s brutal intervention, when he silenced critical voices in Belarus, yesterday’s false elections did not meet international standards and condemned international partners,” the British ministry said in a joint statement with Australia, Canada, European Union and New Zealand.

Britain’s sanctions focused on “leaders of institutions responsible for serious violations of human rights and companies in the Belarusian defense sector that supported the Russian invasion in Ukraine”.

Sanctioned persons

Among the sanctioned persons is the head of the Belarusian Central Election Commission and two directors of Belarusian prisons. According to AFP, companies are engaged in the development and production of ammunition and unmanned aircraft.

“The world has already got used to Lukashenko’s cynical pretense of democracy in Belarus, while in fact it brutally suppresses civil society and opposition voices to strengthen his power,” said British Foreign Minister David Lammy.

“The United Kingdom, together with our partners, will continue to stand on the side of the Belarusian people and reveal those who deny him legitimate right to freedom and democracy,” Canada said the imposition of sanctions on a total of 22 subjects in Belarus.

Lukashenko has been at the forefront of the country since 1994, and it has been expected that the Presidential Office for the next five -year period has been expected to receive without any problems. Western countries blame him for autocracy and violations of basic democratic principles. According to the Belarusian human rights organization Viasna, there are more than 1250 political prisoners in the country.
