Responsible for implementing the welcome operation in Roraima in 2018, General Eduardo Pazuello provides for the US who deal with Venezuelan immigrants. Not for some magnanimous gesture of the president, but for self -interest.
“The subject who is coming to Brazil is failing to go to the US. If it closes this door, he will have to look for another,” argues Pazuello, currently federal deputy for the Rio de Janeiro PL.
It was his experience as one of the creators of the operation with Venezuelans, praised even by the UN, who led the then President Jair Bolsonaro to pinch Peaceuello to the delicate position of Minister of Health during the pandemic. The general was eventually the target of various criticism in the function, however.
Pazuello says the suspension of funds is worrying, due to the impact that will have especially with the International Organization for Migration (IM), whose budget in Brazil is totally dependent on the US government. Partially is also affected by UN, UN organ for refugees.
“This will undoubtedly impact work. It’s worrying, but I think it won’t make the operations unfeasible on site. It will be necessary to look for other forms of financing,” says the general.
In addition, he says, the Brazilian government, the Army and NGOs have service structures on site.
Despite the concern, Pazuello says he naturally faced Trump’s decision to suspend funding. As a scholarship, the parliamentarian tends to see the American president with sympathy.
According to him, new governments they assume have the prerogative of making an assessment if the money is being spent well. “Trump will reassess the results of this. The UN needs to be looked again at its structure. He wants to see his return on his investment,” he says.
“It’s the same when the PT assumes the government and goes everyone away. It is natural that there is a tidying brake,” he adds.
The conclusion that US management will have, he says, is that the work of the welcome operation is “exceptional.”
