The onion lasts fresh for months if you provide the right storage conditions. Thanks to a few simple rules, onions can be a great ingredient in the kitchen until spring. So how do you ensure that your onion stays fresh and tasty? We will tell you several proven methods.
Properly stored onions on a dark, cool and well -ventilated place last 4 to 6 months. In some cases, it retains freshness under 8 months under ideal conditions.
Choosing and Preparing onion for Storage
Make a very thorough selection before storing the onion.
- Get rid of all damaged and soft specimens and those showing signs of germination. The onion that has started to germinate is not suitable for long -term storage, as its taste and structure will deteriorate. The onion is only suitable for storage if it is firm and hard and its skin does not show signs of damage.
- We should also pay attention to the roots of the onion – if they are visible, it should be gently trimmed, as this minimizes the risk of mold.
What containers should I choose for onion storage?
- Onion storage containers should ensure sufficient air circulation and should not retain moisture. The best are wooden boxes in which the onion will have enough space and will be able to “breathe”.
- Wicker basket or jute bag can also be a good choice.
Onion should be stored separately from other vegetables.
They are very sensitive to the presence of ethylene, a gas substance that the onion secretes. Ethylene can speed up the process of maturing other vegetables and fruits, causing them to spoil them.
- Therefore, for the onion to remain fresh as long as possible, it is best to place it in a container that does not come into contact with potatoes, apples or tomatoes.
Don’t store the onion in the refrigerator
One of the most common errors is the storage of onion in the refrigerator. Although it may seem like a practical solution, it is actually the worst choice.
- The moisture produced by the refrigerator can then quickly speed up the process of rotting onions.
- In addition, the onion secretes ethylene, which results in accelerating the maturation of other vegetables and fruits, which may worsen their quality.
The refrigerator also does not provide the right temperature.
- Onion should be stored in a dry, cool room with a temperature between 4 to 10 degrees Celsius.
Where is it best to store onions?
The ideal place for storing onions is, for example, a cool cellar, pantry or attic.
- The room must be dry and well ventilated – in these conditions the onion will remain fresh for several months.
- If you do not have access to the cellar and the attic does not meet these conditions, try to find another cool but dry place in the house.
However, we must keep in mind that the temperature must be neither too low nor too high. At temperatures below 0 ° C, the onion can spoil, while temperatures above 10 ° C will then accelerate the germination process.
