The US Navy watches the Balearic seabed

The US Naval Research Office and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) have set their eyes on the Balearic Islands. As reported from the American country, both institutions moved to Palma de Mallorca with the intention of increasing their collaboration with the Socib and IMedea centers of the islands regarding marine research.

This information was corroborated by the Balearic Government, which confirmed the presence of a group of US researchers who were received by the Department of Education, Antoni Vera.

In addition to the presence of reputed American researchers, the director of Socib, Joaquín Tintoré, the rector of the University of the Balearic Islands, Jaume Cartot and the director of IMedea, Gotzon Basterretxea, were present at the meeting.

In the appointment several issues related to maritime research were addressed, although it focused on the evaluation of the results of the international project ‘Coherent Lagrangian Paths from the ocean surface to the deep ocean (calypso)’, in which they work hand hand all all Institutions.

The project is a collaboration between the US and the Islands, although it is largely financed by the North American country. This has allowed the Balearic Islands to place as a reference in the sector. For its part, Antoni Vera has indicated that the Government is totally involved in the project, which has also been funded thanks to the Nextgen funds.

Among the characteristics of the project are its usefulness, focused on addressing the challenges of climate change in the Mediterranean Sea as well as the improvement in marine monitoring. Regarding the economic matter, it should be noted that the project has a budget of 1.6 million euros, of the 574,144 are contributed by the Government.
