The Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPO) announced on Wednesday (29) the suspension of the IBGE+Foundation, an initiative that launched an internal crisis in the government’s statistics body.
The climate at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was turbulent after the president MARCIO POCHMANN Propose to create the IBGE+Foundation, named internally by parallel IBGE employees. The status of creation of the Foundation provided for the possibility of partnerships and contracts with private entities.
In a press release, the planning reported that it resolved, together with the Institute, to suspend the initiative of the IBGE (IBGE+) scientific and technological innovation Foundation, “proposal supported by MPO, for institutional development and the expansion of sources of resources for IBGE. ”
“Given this challenge, alternative models are being mapped that can give rise to legislative changes, which will require a frank and open dialogue with the National Congress,” said the ministry, to which IBGE is linked, although it has administrative autonomy.
After stating that IBGE is a basic organ in the country’s generation and data analysis, the portfolio also stated that it will give budget support to the agency to formulate the agricultural, forest and aquaculture census.
Last week, IBGE announced names of two new directors after previous holders left the institute in the midst of the crisis. In total, four directors asked to leave the agency this year due to relationship problems with Pochmann. Everyone had been appointed by the current president.

The Institute’s server union claims that the creation of IBGE+ did not undergo internal discussions.
According to the entity, the IBGE board also required that the National Union of Workers in Federal Public Foundations of Geography and Statistics, or Assibge, remove from the name of the entity the acronym IBGE.
Amid turbulence, Pochmann released last week a letter defending the creation of the IBGE+ Foundation and stating that the Institute’s employee union promotes misinformation on the subject.
