The Lula government prepares a ceremony to apologize to official families of Rubens Paiva and from 413 missing politicians of the military dictatorship. The event, scheduled for April, will be held along with the delivery of rectified death certificates, recognizing that the deaths were “unnatural; violent; caused by the Brazilian State in the context of systematic persecution to the population identified as a political dissident of the dictatorial regime established in 1964 ”.

The initiative takes place after the National Council of Justice (CNJ) determines in December that the notary’s offices correct or draw documents from dead and missing political. The measure meets a recommendation of the National Human Rights Council, which reopened the investigation of the Rubens Paiva case in 2024, after the finding that the process had been filed in 1971 under the coercion of the military.
