Champions League 24/25 had the 8th and last round of the league phase held on Wednesday (29/01). The day was agitated, with 18 games and a lot of emotion.
This edition was the first Champions in which the group stage was deleted and the table was unified in a large “running points” of 36 teams.
In the new format of the tournament, 24 teams went from phasethe first eight were directly to the round of 16, while from the ninth to the 24th will compete in a previous playoff.

How is Champions League’s new format?
BEFORE
- 32 teams divided into eight groups, from group A to group H;
- Group Draw: A key head left the pot 1 and faced a pot 2 team, another from pot 3 and another from the pot 4;
- Round trip games, totaling six games for each team in the group stage.
- Criteria of the pots: UEFA National and Coefficient Titles
- Liga Europa: teams that ended in third place were “downgraded” to the other continental tournament
NOW
- 36 clubs at a big running points, but not everyone will face each other;
- In the draw, the 36 clubs were divided into four pots with 9 teams each; each team would face two teams of each pot, that is, eight matches (half at home, half away);
- Criteria: 1. Pots were divided according to UEFA ranking; 2. Teams from the same country could not face each other. Respecting these criteria, each time a team was drawn, a computer automatically defined the clashes.
- Liga Europa: No team eliminated from Champions League will play the other tournament.

What will be the Champions playoff games?
O Playoff will have potential opponents defined by positions in the alloy phase. For example, the teams that ended in 9th (Atalanta) and 10th (Borussia Dortmund) face the teams that were 23º (Sporting) or 24th (Club Brugg); The teams that ended in 11th (Bayern Munich) and 12th (Real Madrid) take the teams that were 21st (Celtic) or 22nd (Manchester City); and so on. You duels will be defined by drawwith eight pots.
O Playoff Games Draw takes place this Friday (01/31)at 8am (Brasília time), at UEFA headquarters, Switzerland.
Teams that ended the alloy phase between 9th and 16th places will be chair heads in this Fridaydoing the Second game of playoffs at home.
Manchester City on the way to Bayern or Real Madrid in playoffs! Of these three recent champions, at least one will not be in the round of 16.
