Congenital malformations among the causes of fetal death, says DGS

The general direction of health says that prematurity and congenital malformations explain most fetal deaths and in the early days of life. The report shows some oscillations, but concludes that fetal and child mortality decreased between 2017 and 2021.

O (DGS) Analyzes fetal and children deaths up to five years between 2017 and 2021, which includes the pandemic period. In the five years, 1,559 fetal deaths were reported, and most occurred after 28 weeks of pregnancy. In 2021, there are 9 more deaths than in 2017.

Looking at the deaths of babies less than a year old, there were 1,183. They were more frequent until seven days after birth. Here there is a break compared 2017 with 2021. Congenital malformations and prematurity, associated with weight restriction, are the main causes pointed out.

Looking at the deaths in children between 1 and 4 years old, 291, mainly caused by cancers, infectious diseases and accidents.

In virtually all categories analyzed, 2018 stands out for a rise in mortality. But in the global, DGS concludes that the fetal mortality rate has decreased sharply in Portugal, having stabilized from 2008 to 2021.

Child mortality recorded historical minimums in 2020 and 2021, years marked by the pandemic. However, more recent data that are not included in this report, point to an increase in babies deaths until the 1st year life.
