Denmark’s sovereignty is an “essential issue” for the European Union, the European Council president said on Wednesday António CostaWhile US President Donald Trump continually expresses his interest in claiming possession of Arctic Island, a Danish Danish territory.
“The territoriality of Denmark, the sovereignty of Denmark, the stability of its borders is obviously an essential issue,” Costa told Euronews.
The comments echo those of the EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, who said the block “is not negotiating” about Greenland.
Trump said Greenland is vital to US security and that Denmark should give up control of the strategically important island in the Arctic. He also stated that he does not rule out the possibility of using military or economic power to achieve his goal.
The US Armed Forces have a permanent basis in the northwest of Greenland, which serves as an early warning system of ballistic missiles.
On Tuesday, NATO and Denmark agreed at a meeting to focus on strengthening Arctic defenses. Copenhagen said he would increase the regions’s defense spending by $ 2 billion.
