It is common to associate veganism with a restrictive and needy diet in protein – the most targeted macronutrient in the “fitness” middle. However, this is a fallacy for Guilherme Abomai, a bodybuilder of the “Open” category that will make its professional debut at Arnold Classic South America in April.
“From the moment I started eating more vegetables, I noticed improvements in my mood, my sleep, my mood, my recovery and my skin quality,” says the athlete, nutritionist and journalist in an exclusive interview with Blog.
Since 2016, Abomai had followed the traditional bodybuilding protocol – with high amounts of animal protein – until 2021, when he had to rethink his lifestyle due to problems in the gastrointestinal tract.
“I made that basic and monotonous diet, my meals were basically rice with chicken or egg (…) at the time, my then coach we understand that, for me, a diet with more vegetables and fruits would be beneficial. That was a one Stroke change in my quality of life.
Even after treating the problem and having the possibility of eating again as before, the professional athlete decided to continue to be vegan: “This did not happen because I understood what veganism was. Philosophy made sense to me and I adopted it (. ..) I often say that I was thrown to veganism because of health, but what kept me in it is philosophy. This lifestyle is very linked to sustainability, empathy with animals, and all this makes a lot me.”
For the amount of nutrients necessary for your profession, Abomai uses various foods. According to the athlete, its main sources are the isolated proteins from peanuts, soy and pea, as well as temple, meat and nutritional yeast, for example.
According to the bodybuilding, the biggest difficulty in combining sports with veganism is contact with the public: “Very few people really know what veganism is. Many do not know, and therefore criticize.”
Although the professional has become a reference in his area, he is the target of various criticism on social networks. “I hear a lot of things like ‘the guy has built his physique being omnivorous and now raises the flag of veganism’ or ‘this guy proves that what matters is not food, but the anabolic steroids’, as if I didn’t even have to eat for Grow, “he says.
The bodybuilder points out that most of the criticism happens in the digital field and never had to deal with a hater personally. However, he opines that “the world is not yet prepared for vegans.”
