Meeting occurs six days after the group announces a letter to press the petista to settle 100,000 families
The president will meet today with (MST) leaders at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia. This meeting occurs at a critical moment, a few days after the movement intensified the pressure on the government to settle 100,000 families. The MST has expressed dissatisfaction with the current federal administration, claiming that land reform is paralyzed. In a letter recently released, the movement not only presented its demands, but the demarcation of indigenous and quilombola territories, but also highlighted their solidarity with countries such as Cuba, Palestine and Venezuela.
The Ministry of Regional Development reported that the Government’s goal is to settle 295,000 families by the end of the term, with an investment of about R $ 700 million scheduled for this year. However, the government acknowledged that there are significant delays in land reform actions, which has generated frustration among social movements. The meeting with the MST is scheduled for 15h and will be attended by the Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, and the president of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra), as well as several representatives of the movement.
In addition to the meeting with the MST, President Lula’s Day at Planalto Palace will be filled with other important meetings. He will meet with the Minister of Communication and the Special Secretary for Legal Affairs of the Civil House. At 17h, Lula will meet with the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, to discuss the delay in the dissemination of the notes of the Unified Selection System (Sisu), which generated a wave of complaints. The government is concerned about the impact of this problem in the Ministry of Education, and the minister was summoned to provide clarification.
