Lula gives a message to Trump: 'If I tax Brazilian products, there will be reciprocity'

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) commented on Thursday (30) that if the United States tax Brazil will have reciprocity.

“If he taxes Brazilian products, there will be reciprocity in Brazil to tax products that are imported from the US,” he said.

Lula’s statement dates back to Colombia, which refused to receive deported from the United States this week and caused friction between the two countries.

In retaliation, Trump said he would rate 25% products from the Latin American country. After friction, Colombia agreed to receive the flights.

Following, the White House announced in a statement that it would pause the application of extra tariffs and other sanctions announced by Trump.

“He just has to respect the sovereignty of other countries. He was elected to govern US. Other presidents elected to rule with other countries, ”he continued.

Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency is a delicate subject to the Brazilian government, as the representatives have opposite views and sides.

Lula seeks to establish a pragmatic relationship with Trump, especially in environmental issues.

On Tuesday (28), Lula met with ministers, representatives of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and the Federal Police to deal with the deportation of Brazilian citizens by the United States, which caused friction between the two countries.

The guidance within the government, however, was not to create friction with the newly sworn in the US.

Lula does not want to break down with a historical partner country in Brazil, especially in this start of office in the US.

The meeting, held at the Planalto Palace, took place after the landing in Manaus (AM) of a group of 88 deported Brazilians, carried and chained.

This motivated the Brazilian government to request the removal of the handcuffs and to send a plane from the Brazilian Air Force to finish the transportation of the deported.

Conversation with journalists

Lula talked to journalists on Thursday at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia.

The previously announced -themed interview marks a change in Lula’s communication strategy.

In the first half of the term, the president even met with journalists from Brazil and other countries in “cafes” in the Planalto, with another type of organization and, in general, a question by a press vehicle.

Two weeks ago, publicist Sidônio Palmeira took over the Planalto Secretariat of Social Communication, replacing Deputy Paulo Pimenta (PT-RS).
