The European Commission (EC) refuses to connect the possibility of restoring Russian natural gas supplies to the European Union (EU) with peace negotiations on Ukraine. TASR informs about this based on the TASS report, quoted by Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper.

On Thursday, the spokeswoman responded to the request of journalists for an opinion on the Administration of the Financial Times (FT), according to which several EU Member States proposed to include the renewal of Russian gas supplies to Europe into the text of the future agreement to settle the conflict in Ukraine. “We do not associate with peace conversations. If there are such negotiations, they will be with Ukraine. We do not confirm any link between gas supply and peace negotiations,” Hipper said.

FT had previously reported on Thursday that the idea that the text of the future conflict settlement agreement in Ukraine also includes the question of the restoration of Russian gas supplies to Europe was supported by several representatives of Germany, Hungary and some other Member States of the Union. According to them, gas supplies from the Russian Federation would reduce energy prices in the EU and “gave both parties a reason to comply with an agreement on the ceasefire”the daily said, referring to sources in European capitals.
