BRASILIA, DF (Folhapress) – US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday (29) a new decree that will order the preparation of an installation in the prison of Guantanamo, on the island of Cuba, to receive 30,000 illegal immigrants detained in American solo.

“We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to stop the worst illegal criminals and foreigners threatening the American people. Some of them are so bad that we don’t trust countries to hold them, because we don’t want them to come back. This will double our ability immediately. It’s a difficult place to leave, ”Trump said at an event at the White House announcing the new measures.

“If you look at Venezuela, the crime there fell 77% because they took gang members, prisoners, traffickers and sent them all to the US,” the Republican said.

Created in 2002 during the management of George W. Bush and the consequences of the September 11 terrorist attack, the prison on a piece of American territory on the island of Cuba was known for torture practices and became a great headache to the subsequent administrations.

Folha de S.Paulo was at the American military base in February last year. There, he followed the testimony of psychologist James Mitchell, named as one of the minds behind the so -called “advanced interrogation techniques” used by CIA in secret prisons around the world, known as “Black Sites” in the early years of the war on terror.

The technical term encompasses practices such as waterboarding (simulated drowning), walling (beating a person’s head against the wall) and sleep deprivation for days. Some prisoners were also subjected to “rectal hydration” -liquid intraction by the anus through a tube, characterized as rape by lawyers.

The practices were banned by Barack Obama (2009-2017), who admitted to being torture. The former president tried to close the arrest during his term, but failed. During the first government of Trump (2017-2021), the Republican did not continue his efforts, and even said he would release Waterboarding again; Then he went back. Biden resumed the defense of the end of Guantanamo, but did not give the same priority as Obama.

Trump announced the measure on Wednesday during the signature of the Laken Riley Law, the first law passed by the Congress that the Republican sanctions. Riley is a Georgia student murdered by an irregular immigrant later sentenced to life imprisonment -the case was fuel of Trump’s anti -immigration rhetoric and Congress Allies.

According to the text, federal authorities will be required to arrest any detained immigrant or accused of crimes such as theft, aggression or murders.

The law also gives power to state prosecutors the federal government for damages to persons or states resulting from failures in the execution of migratory policy.
