A man has died this Friday when jumping from a housing building on fire firefighters have rescued a woman with her two children and another man, the four unharmed. In addition, an Ertzaintza agent has been treated by the toilets after being affected by smoke inhalation.

The victim has jumped through a third floor window in the back of the building fleeing the flames and has been initially attended by firefighters and then by the health teams, which have transferred him to a hospital where he has died.

The fire has started shortly after 17.00 on the ground floor of the building and has quickly extended to the roof. The affected building is made of wood, so the fire has expanded rapidly by it. The man who has lost his life has thrown out of a window at the back of the building. Despite the attempts of firefighters and toilets, man has died at the scene. In addition, an Ertzaintza agent has been assisted by smoke inhalation, Basque Police has reported.

Firefighters’ performance has allowed 24 people to evict. Ertzaintza has reported that “an investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances of this tragic event.” The fire has been controlled around 19.00, although extinction services are maintained alert because the wood structure of the building makes absolute control of the situation difficult. The Basauri City Council and the Bizkaia Provincial Council are looking for a solution to house the 24 people affected by the fire.

Firefighters have specified that the fire has started around 17:10 on the ground floor due to unknown causes and has spread to the roof of the three -storey property. The fire has been controlled around seven in the afternoon. Firefighters continue to throw foam on the building, whose old wooden structure has hindered extinction tasks. Emergency services claim that when they reached the property, with a large burden of combustible material, it was completely wrapped in flames.

The head of the Firefighters Regional Service, Javier Pinos, explained that the flames have been “difficult” to control, being the “fully developed” fire when they have reached the place. The destroyed building is located in numbers 5 and 5 bis on Kareaga Goikoa de Basauri. The municipal technicians will review these portals tomorrow, as Pinos said. The numbers from 3 to 7 have also been affected by the flames, although firefighters have managed to cut the spread.

The authorities have evicted 24 people residing in those homes, for which the Basauri City Council and the Bizkaia Diputación are looking for a housing solution. Especially, for those who do not have a family network or friends who welcome them to spend the night, as explained by the mayor of Basauri, Asier Iragorri.

To the place, Ertzaintza agents and thirty troops from the Basauri, Urioste, Derio and Iurreta parks have been transferred.
