White brand products are part of the daily life of Portuguese consumers, standing out for the most affordable price. However, many people still question their quality and the company responsible for their production. In the Accounts Savings program, Pedro Andersson, a journalist specializing in personal finance, clarifies that it is possible to identify the origin of some white brand products, namely those of animal origin.
To find out which company is responsible for preparing and packaging a particular product, just look for an oval symbol with numbers and letters on the packaging. This brand, known as the “check brand”, corresponds to the establishment that has last manipulated the product. According to the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary, by searching this code on Google, it will be possible to access a list where the company name is named.
It is important to note that a white brand product may not be exactly the same as the original brand, even if the two are produced in the same place. Differences in composition, thickness, cut or even the choice of raw material can influence the end result. However, knowing that a product has been manufactured in a certain place allows you to infer that you have been through the same quality controls as the best known brands.
The Accounts Savings team, quoted by, has done a practical test in three supermarkets – Continent, Auchan and Pingo Doce – to identify the origin of some white brand products.
- Frozen cod: Auchan and continent loins are packed by Riberalves, while those of Pingo Doce are packed by the Pascoal brand;
- Half-border milk: The continent is produced by Lactogal (the same company that manufactures Mimosa, Gresso and Agros), Auchan’s by Parmalat and Pingo Doce by Terra Alegre;
- Yogurts: Auchan and Pingo Doce are manufactured by Gelgurte, while those from the continent are produced by Schreiber Foods Portugal, a company responsible for the Danone brand;
- Flamengo sliced cheese: The continent comes from the same unit that manufactures those of Gresso and Agros, Auchan’s comes from Lurouod, and the Pingo Doce of the same company that makes Limiano and Terra Nostra cheese;
- Stiff: Auchan’s are made by the company that has the pole, those of the continent by the noble and those of Pingo Doce by Monte Dalva, in Montijo.
If you want to know who manufactures a particular white brand product, just check the verification brand code on the packaging and search online. Thus, you can make more informed choices and understand which companies behind the products you consume.
