The Starmer refuses to return the country to the EU.
The United Kingdom commemorates five years since its withdrawal from the European Union. However, the British government does not celebrate Brexit’s anniversary, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer has long been trying for closer relations with the block. He supported Britain’s stay in the EU already in a referendum in 2016. TASR writes this based on the AFP report.
“We look ahead and we know that we can do more so that Brexit works for the benefit of the United Kingdom’s inhabitants,” Starmer spokesman told reporters.
“It is in the national interest of Britain to have EU relations based on greater cooperation,” he added, recalling that the Union is “the largest business partner and the closest neighbor” of the United Kingdom.
The British voted for 52 to 48 percent for the EU withdrawal. The referendum was followed by three and a half years of disputes regarding the future relations between the United Kingdom and the EU. The country officially left the Union on January 31, 2020 at 23.00 local time (1 February 0.00 CET).
Starmer’s arguments about returning refuses
According to AFP, public opinion polls suggest that most British consider Brexit a bad decision. The agency mentions the results of YouGOV’s survey published on Friday, according to which up to 55 percent of respondents are currently supporting the country’s re -accession to the EU.
Starmer refuses to say about this step. Nevertheless, it wants to improve the existing trade agreement and cooperation between the two parties, the validity of which will be extended in 2026. On Monday, Starmer as the first British Prime Minister will participate in the European Council meeting from Brexit.
