In the autumn you will store them carefully, often after your own harvest, you look forward to how they will taste, what you cook, how some part in the spring with love will include soil and prepare another crop. Then in the middle of winter you will come to the cellar for another batch and almost jump. Germinated. And not one or two, but a quarter. God knows when the remaining ones will germinate! What about it?
Beware of the variety
The first step to success and failure is the right choice of variety. If you choose potatoes that are perfect, but not inappropriate for long -term storage, you will not do anything with them even in the best cellar. They just germinate, even if you put yourself on your head.
Air and moisture
What the potatoes should be guaranteed to discourage germination is sufficient moisture. You should ventilate at any time when it does not freeze, but at the same time it is important to maintain low temperature in space. And try to increase moisture. “If possible, pour the floor straight away,” says Jana Bucharová, expert of the magazine Recipe for garden themes. “Or at least in the cellar put a bucket with water.”
Especially not with fruit
A significant advice, which is often forgotten. It is clear, for who has two separate rooms in which they can store fruit and vegetables well? But when it comes to storing potatoes, the fruit can completely spoil your work.
“The fruit excludes ethyl when storing, which is ripened by gas,” explains the expert. “And when you put them in the cellar together, it is almost certain that after some time the keys will set out on the potatoes.” So you can put the carrots with the potatoes together, but rather move the apples somewhere else.
