Germany: Merkel's attack on Mertz just before the election

The former Chancellor of Germany, on the occasion of the country’s campaign in question, criticized Christian Democrat Friedrich Mertz for his decision to impose a “hard” resolution on immigration in parliament by voting.

Angela Merkel described the alliance between him and his resolution as a “mistake”.

Although the resolution was non -binding, it was the first time that a democratic dominant party was based on a far -right group after World War II to win the majority.

In a rare immediate intervention in politics since her last term expired in 2021, Merkel published an open letter saying that Merz – the conservative leader who has the lead in polls in the face of the early February 23 elections – He had followed a proposal that put a brake on any parliamentary majority that demands the support of the anti -immigration alternative to Germany.

The rage for voting

Merkel’s unexpected warning of Merz comes to add to a wave of anger caused by Wednesday’s vote and which could overturn the Election campaign for the 23 February ballot.

The conservative leader justified his attempt to revise immigration policy by saying that the deadly knife attack on Bavaria last week – apparently committed by a 28 -year -old Afghan whose asylum request was rejected – proved to be.

In her letter, Merkel appeared to implicitly support Saltz and the Greens, who advocate that Mertz’s proposals are unconstitutional and contradict the law of the European Union.

Referring to the attack on Bavaria, in which two people were killed, including a two -year -old child, Merkel urged “all democratic parties to work beyond the political borders of the parties”.
