The nominee of the conservative government Konstantinos Tasulas won 160 votes in this round.
The Greek Parliament’s deputies failed to elect a new president on Friday. Informed about the news website ekaterimini, writes TASR.
The conservative government nominee Konstantinos Tasulas won 160 votes in this round, 40 less than 200 needed for a complete victory. The same number of votes was awarded to Tasulas in the first round of the election 25 January.
The third round of the vote in which the candidate will need 180 votes will be scheduled for Thursday 6 February. If no candidate reaches this threshold, in the fourth and last round – five days later (February 12) – the quorum will be reduced to 151 votes.
It is assumed that in the last round of Tasulas, the former President of Parliament and Member of the New Democracy (ND), he will gain a presidential position without major problems, as the new democracy has 156 deputies in the 300-digit parliament.
On Friday’s second round of the election, Tasulas had three counter -candidates. Luka Katseli, supported by the Radical Left Syriza, won 40 votes, while the candidate of the opposition Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) Tasos Janicis voted 34 deputies. Kostas Kyriaku, a candidate of the far right -wing democratic patriotic movement – Victory (Niki) had the support of 14 votes. The mandate of the current President of Katerina Sakellaropulus ends on March 13, until then, MEPs have to choose her successor.
