National Plan seeks to integrate SUS and civil society actions to combat hepatitis B and C
The Ministry of Health presented the Viral hepatitis elimination guide in Brazil During the meeting of CIT (Tripartite Inter -Managers Commission), held in Brasilia, this Thursday (30.Jan.2025). The aim to Eradicate viral hepatitis by 2030in line with the objectives of the UN Agenda 2030 (United Nations).
The guide suggests the use of SUS (Unified Health System) tools, adjusted to local needs to achieve the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis. It also proposes actions by civil and academic organizations, seeking a comprehensive and inclusive approach.
Draurio Barreira, director of Dathi (Department of HIV, AIDS, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections), emphasized the viability of the goal, thanks to the technologies provided by SUS.
“The Ministry of Health has 2 main objectives: to increase the survival and quality of life of people with chronic hepatitis B or C, and prevent new people from infecting these viruses. With the technologies we offer today in SUS, this is totally possible ”he said.
The approval of the guide in CIT represents a consensus between different governmental spheres and civil society, establishing responsibilities and ensuring resources for the proposed strategies.
Training workshops on the guide and micro -planning for its implementation in 3 selected states, based on epidemiological and organizational criteria are foreseen. In 2023 16,173 new cases of hepatitis C and 10,091 of hepatitis B were recorded.
