In the second half of the nineties, (Ottawa, Canada, 50 years old) was the most popular female soloist in the world. It was all thanks to the album Jagged Little Pill (1995) that devastated as a true phenomenon and dispatched 33 million copies. Your subsequent, more experimental discs such as Supposed Former Infatuation Junkiethey could not overcome in sales to that phenomenon (no one could have), but they have given him to form a race that until now adds the 75 million records sold. His fame was so huge that when filmmaker Kevin Smith offered him a role in his film Dogma (1999) was playing God.

Actually, she had already published a couple of records before making known. Your debut, Alanishe saw the light, only in Canada, in 1991. She was then 16 years old, and an image and an disc-pop style similar to that of other youth stars then as Tiffany or Debbie Gibson. He obtained some success in his country and gave him the opportunity to go on tour as Vanilla Ice. The following year he published Now Is The Timewhere their steps were a little more towards ballads, with letters open to more content, but the decisive step occurred when it decided to move to Los Angeles. There he met the composer and producer Glen Ballard, a man from the industry who came from bringing to success to the Wilson Phillips female trio and had previously worked with Michael Jackson (he was one of the composers of his theme Man In The Mirror) and a very varied cast of artists among which it even appeared.

Ballard fell in love with Alanis’s voice and decided to sponsor her. Together they managed to sign a contract with Maverick. Although the success of the vocalist came to increase her as “the queen of anguish of alternative rock” (as defined by the magazine Rolling Stone), The truth is that she was seen under suspicion from that scene. Like a little earlier, the Canadian was seen as an example of the style called as Bube pad. He was accused of taking aesthetics and a bit of the grungethen fashionable, to provide false authenticity to what would be a commercial product. But the truth is that, when he started recording Jagged Little Pill With Ballard, he decided to respect Alanis’s vision and not mold it at all.

“Both she and Sheryl Crow had a preponderant role in the nineties,” says the musical journalist Toni Castarnado, author of the books (66 RPM Editions, 2011) and (flint editions, 2022). “There were not so many women in an industry that still looked suspiciously at the female figure in music. The impact was huge and deserved, they could breastfeed. Those songs were heard everywhere, the video clips were at all hours in the MTV or in the bars. It is part of the culture of a whole generation. I find his daring of that time very remarkable and how later he knew how to read the situation. She knew that, no matter how much she tried, there would be no other Jagged Little Pill. And with that flow already in the bedroom, he was giving pildoritas on albums that never left the raíl. He did not try to be what he was not, he did not start hip-hop or record jazz standards. He had a formula, and with the occasional variation, he went with her until the end. And so, to this day. ”

Her record career throughout the 21st century has had a lower impact, although she also decided to fold less to the demands of the great industry. In 2004 he published So-Called Chaos; In 2008, Flavors Of Entanglement (with which he finished contract with Maverick); In 2012, Havoc And Bright Lights; In 2020, Such Pretty Forks In The Road; and, in 2022, his last work to date, The Storm Before The Calmwhich is a meditation album. In fact, in recent years Morissette has not generated as many news for his musical work as for his personal life (he is the mother of three children with rapper Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway) and for linking with initiatives linked to spirituality and self -help. In 2015, a podcast premiered, where he spoke with different personalities of varied topics, such as psychology, art, design, health and well -being or relationships. A year later, he opened an office in The Guardian called, and on his Instagram account he showed his fondness for yoga, Buddhism or nutrition.

Women under influence

Already from his ninety bum and throughout these three decades, Alanis Morissette has influenced many singers, from Meredith Brooks to Avril Lavigne or Pink, and it can even be said that Taylor Swift was anticipated. Its influence seems to have intensified more in recent years. In 2020, for example, Halsey invited her to collaborate in her subject and, more recently, she has been very claimed by the young Olivia Rodrigo (with whom, by the way, she will share a sign in the next edition of the festival). The two artists had and that same year Rodrigo also confessed the influence of Jagged Little Pill In the Zane Lowe podcast for Apple Music. “I think there is a period in which all young people aged 16, 17 and 18 go through a time when they feel incredibly lost, distressed without reason and sad. This album for me is my interpretation of that period of my life through which I was happening, ”.

“We put Jagged Little Pill In loop when we were girls, ”says Marina and Teresa Iñesta, sisters and members of the Cantabrian Repression group, who are 29 and 26 years old respectively. “What caught us from the beginning was his personality. There is only one like her. He has strength, passion and plays a lot with vocal arrangements in all his songs. And there are also the lyrics, always claiming, very social. He is an artist who has never cared to say what he thinks. She is brave and looks like a wise woman who knows what she does. Surely his way of being and his lyrics did not like everyone, even bothering. Today, luckily, we are more and more women who are not afraid to sing and do what they want on stage. Although censorship still exists, courage is applauded. ”

Toni Castarnado shares the same arguments: “Yes, there is that influence on attitude, how to focus a musical career, on the footprint you leave, in the impudence, that daring, how they are those who choose their own letters. I may without the Alanis then there was no Olivia Rodrigo today. They broke the mold of the right and, also, many schemes. And then something we forget: the songs and what they told, what they meant then and the idea that 30 years later they still have value. How to forget if not, that iconic red wool hat in Ironic or the desmelene of You Oughta Know in his video clips ”.

“There is interest in recovering things that worked very well in the nineties,” he continues. “In fact, something that has done very well Alanis is to make the Jagged Little Pillwith a version for the 25th anniversary, another previous one re -recorded in acoustic version … she has continued to make records, but already without the intention of transcending too much, or that is the feeling it gives. He has wanted to continue composing when he surely no longer had that obligation. And seen the reaction for the news of their concerts or for what it can generate, it is clear that there is interest. ”

No less important than his influence on later artists is the respect that his classmates profess. When the Canadian launched the 25th anniversary tour of her best known album, between 2021 and 2023 her openings were Garbage and Liz Phair, and, later, Cat Power, Beth Orton, Aimee Mann and Feist. A year later he launched the Triple Moon Tourwith a poster shared with the pioneer of punk rock Joan Jett and the young Country Morgan Wade singer -songwriter. To this next world tour, which will start on March 21 at the Lollapalooza Festival in Argentina, it arrives without new material (although in a recent interview in the magazine Variety He said he had begun to compose) and a foreseeable repertoire of great successes. Toni Castarado awaits him as curious as doubts. “Although he has been active and continued publishing albums, the unknown is to know how they endure those songs that had their boom 30 years ago and if, in the current context, they are still defensible,” concludes the journalist.
