“Is it important to create an action plan for plant -based foods in Europe? ”“
A Deco Informa …
It subscribed, with several European organizations, an open letter addressed to the European Commission to appeal to the creation of a European Plant Food Action Plan. This plan will respond to environmental, economic and public health challenges, promoting the transition to more sustainable, resilient and healthy agri -food systems.
This communication underlines the urgency of aligning European food policies with climate objectives and recommended nutritional guidelines, highlighting the essential role of origin foods. This plan should integrate financial support to sustainable and biological production, encouraging agroecological practices that reinforce European strategic autonomy in plant proteins.
Among the main benefits pointed out in this action are:
- Improved public health: Diets rich in plant foods can prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes and certain types of cancer.
- Environmental sustainability: Increasing the production of legumes and other vegetables contributes to healthier soils, reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers and less ecological footprint.
- More efficient economy: Reducing costs associated with negative externalities of current food production, such as pollution and health impacts, may generate significant savings for the Member States.
In Portugal, where Mediterranean food is a reference for health and sustainability, the promotion of plant foods is an opportunity to reinforce this cultural heritage and improve the quality of life of consumers. Despite its advantages, studies show that many Portuguese do not yet consume the recommended amount of fruits, vegetables and legumes, which contributes to the increase of public health problems, such as obesity and chronic diseases. This European plan may be an essential step in ensuring that consumers have access to healthier, affordable and more sustainable future food options.
