Archaeologists discover traces of the Abbey of St. Savino in Italy

A team of Polish and Italian archaeologists discovered traces of the São Savino Abbey, located in Jesi, Italy.

According to 16th century chronicles, the Abbey of St. Savino was founded by the Goths in the 6th century CD.

Later, according to the Lombard, a Germanic people who won most of the Ostrogotic Kingdom of Italy.

A first documented reference of the Abbey dates from 1222when Pope Honório III, through papal bull No. 7, gave instructions to the bishop of Jesi and the abbot of San Savino to persuade the inhabitants of Jesi to swear their loyalty to the Church and to submit to papal authority.

In the mid -fifteenth century, the abbey and monastic buildings fell in ruin and were largely forgotten until they were Accidentally rediscovered close to the Boari de Jesi Forum in the 1980s.

In a new research project to unravel the origins of the Abbey, those of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University Institute of Archeology, working in collaboration with the Abaco Society Cooperative, identified previous phases of the expansion and construction of the site.

During the initial phase of the project, archaeologists used Tnoninvasive ethics to document the visible traces of the Abbeydating from its final phase of construction between the 12th and 14th centuries.

Using the soil penetration radarthe investigators revealed three previous phases of the construction of the abbey under their Romanesmore Foundations.

According to the study’s authors, the abbey, in its oldest form, was a modest building with a single ship.

To date this initial phase, an exploratory survey will be required, which will allow the team to analyze stratigraphy and organic materials for radiocarbon dating, thus allowing a better understanding of the context of the place.
