Three federal deputies will compete for the chairman of the Chamber of Deputies on Saturday, 1st, in the election for Biennium 2025-2026: Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ), Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) and Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS ).
Hugo Motta emerges as a favorite in the dispute for the presidency of the house. The federal deputy has already secured the support of 17 benches, as well as having the public support of the current mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). The base of parties that declares support for the Paraíba deputy sums 488 parliamentarians, but the secret vote brings uncertainties about the fidelity of the members of these benches.
Despite being wide favorite, Motta needs to secure at least 257 votes to win the election. This Monday, 27, Motta received two other public support in São Paulo. The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), and the mayor of the state capital, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), met with the deputy in a pizzeria in the Higienópolis neighborhood, in São Paulo and reinforced the support of the deputy.

At dinner, Tarcisio stated that the São Paulo bench “is closed” with Motta’s candidacy. According to him, the purpose of the event was to present demands and projects, as well as “pave a path” for future debates
The event was organized by Deputy Maurício Neves, state president of Progressives, and also attended the parliamentarians of São Paulo Marcos Pereira, president of Republicans, and Arnaldo Jardim, leader of citizenship.
Among Motta’s opponents in the dispute is Deputy Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ). PSOL has 13 deputies on the bench – Fernanda Melchionna, through Rio Grande do Sul; Célia Xakriabá, by Minas Gerais; Tarcísio Motta, Chico Alencar, Pastor Henrique Vieira, Talíria Petrone and Glauber Braga, in Rio de Janeiro; and Ivan Valente, Luiza Erundina, Sâmia Bomfim, Érika Hilton, Prof. Luciene Cavalcante and Guilherme Boulos, for Sao Paulo – and there are two elections launches her own candidacy.

Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB)
Training physician, Hugo Motta is 35 years old and born in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. He is from a traditional political family of Patos, in the interior of the state. The maternal grandmother, paternal grandfather and his father were mayors of the municipality. His maternal grandfather, Edivaldo Mota, occupied a chair of the chamber between 1987 and 1992.
Motta’s name for Lira’s succession was not pointed out until the end of August last year, when Centrão and the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva articulated to put him as a successor to the command of the house, which was accepted by the Alagoas.

In addition to being part of the leadership group of the center that orbits around Lira, Motta is appointed as a parliamentarian capable of uniting the two large blocks of the house. Paraibano is part of the alliance that brings together republicans, MDB, PSD and Somos, but has traffic with PP and União Brasil.
Hugo Motta’s political career began in 2010, when he was elected federal deputy at 21 and 22 days old, obtaining 86,150 votes. At the time, he became the youngest parliamentarian in history to be elected, done that he keeps to this day.
With the electoral stronghold in Patos, Motta applied for a place in the House three times, in 2014, 2018 and 2022, and was victorious in all claims.

Between 2010 and 2018, Hugo Motta was affiliated with the MDB. In the party, he became one of the members of Eduardo Cunha’s “Shock Troop”. Today, Hugo Motta is close to the federal government, but in 2016 he voted in favor of the impeachment request of former President Dilma Rousseff. The petista had the mandate revoked due to the scandal of the tax pedaling, revealed by Estadão.
Eight years after Dilma’s impeachment, Motta became a figure close to the Lula administration in Paraíba. He has a good relationship with Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, and received strokes from the economic team at an event held in January last year.
Motta left the MDB in 2018, joining the Republicans. With influence on the party, today he is leader of the acronym bench in the House. The favorite to preside over the house is closer to Lira than federal deputy Marcos Pereira (Republicans-SP), national president of the acronym.

As Estadão showed, allies say he is “correct”, “competent” and has “word”, that is, it fulfills what it promises. Motta’s close circle also classifies him as an attentive parliamentarian with deputies, not only with leaders, but also with the so -called “low clergy”, a term used to refer to parliamentarians of poor political expression in the House.
Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL)
The Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) announced the candidacy of Deputy Pastor Henrique Vieira to the succession of Lira in the presidency of the House. The deputy elected by Rio is in his first term in the House, elected in 2022.

Novo)
Deputy Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS) officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of the House to, according to him, represent an alternative of opposition to the Lula government.
“We are not comfortable that we have only two candidacies launched, one from Centrão and one from PSOL. The opposition needs to have an option, because I understand that we cannot be in the hands of the same groups that have dominated the House and the Senate for so many years, ”said Van Hattem in a statement released on Monday, 27.
The deputy also committed to guidelines such as the impeachment of President Lula and the amnesty to those involved in the acts of January 8. In addition, Van Hattem also defended the fight against abuse of authority, criticizing what it considers interference from the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Federal Police (PF).
With only four deputies in the House, the new wants to mark a position and influence the debate with Van Hattem’s candidacy. He has already disputed other elections for the command of the house, without success, but maintains the speech that it represents an opposition to “physiological” interests and the alliance with the government.
The candidacy faces resistance due to the favoritism of Hugo Motta, which has the support of PT, PL, Republicans, among other parties. Still, Van Hattem can attract votes from disgruntled pockets.
Van Hattem recently was indicted by the Federal Police after accusing the delegate Fabio Schor of producing “fraudulent reports.” During a speech in the House in August, he called the delegate “bandit” and said: “I have parliamentary immunity.” The indictment provoked reactions, including the defense of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), which classified the action as an “attack on the Brazilian Parliament.”
In response, Van Hattem called the indictment “ridiculous” and reaffirmed his critical stance on the Federal Police. He also criticized the indictment of Bolsonaro and 39 others on suspicion of plotting a blow, which included the murder of President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes. “These reports have more holes than Swiss cheese,” he said.
Currently, Van Hattem holds his second term as a federal deputy for Rio Grande do Sul. He was a councilman of the municipality of Dois Irmãos at the age of 18, elected with 697 votes in 2004; candidate for state deputy three times (2006, 11. 656 votes; 2010, 14,068 votes; 2014, 35,345 votes); President of Progressive Youth Gaucha (2007-2009); and academic director of the Tarso Dutra Foundation for Political Studies and Public Administration.
He worked as a special advisor to International Relations and Economics in the House of Representatives.
