Firefighters are controlled by two devastating fires.
Firefighters in southern California managed to get under complete control of both the most devastating forest fires that stood out in the communities around Los Angeles for more than three weeks. This was announced on Friday by the California Forestry Office and Fire Protection. TASR reports this based on AFP and AP reports.
These two large fires, called Palisades and Eaton – according to the site – and several smaller fires caused the worst natural disaster in the history of the Los Angeles district. At least 28 people have lost their lives and more than 16,000 buildings are damaged or destroyed, the Californian fire brigade said. At a time when the situation was most critical, it was ordered to evacuate more than 180,000 people.
According to Accuweather, damages and economic losses are estimated at over $ 250 billion (€ 240 billion).
Rain caused problems
Last week in southern California, it finally rained, which helped the firefighters to finish fires, but at the same time increased the risk of lightning floods and mudsalon in the hills and spreading the toxic material that remained after the disposal of fires, AP said.
In its statement, the Fire Brigade added that insulated fires are still smashing in the steep mountain terrain, but their expansion was stopped.
In this context, the spokeswoman of the fire brigade in Los Angeles Margaret Stewart said the rain was an obstacle in this case, because it resulted in mudslides and road blocks, which could not be used by firefighters and rescuers.
“If this rain came two weeks ago, it could be more useful,” Stewart said.
