Gustavo Petro asks Portugal extradition of Diego Marín, the "tsar of smuggling" in Colombia

Marín was arrested in December in northern Portugal after fleeing from Spain.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro asked Portugal that Extraditis Diego Marín, known as “Papá Smurf” or “Smurf” and considered the “counterfall of the smuggling” in Colombia.

“I hope from Portugal the extradition of the greatest smuggler in contemporary history of Colombia. The great smuggling is the laundering of capital of the great drug traffickers,” said the Colombian head of state on Friday.

Diego Marín “has infiltrated governments to the core to continue the destruction of national industry and the laundering of capital through smuggling,” Petro said on social network X.

Before being detained in Portugal, Marín had been detained in Spain, but fled after being released as he awaited the completion of the terms of the extradition process for Colombia.

Marín, who has double nationality – Colombian and Spanish – was arrested on April 5 in Gandia, East of Spain.

Spanish justice ordered its release with precautionary measures, such as passport withdrawal and the obligation to appear every 15 days, while the extradition request was being processed.

Colombian authorities want to accuse Marín of smuggling, bribery and participation in a criminal organization.

In June, Petro had asked Spain to extradition Marín so that he could “submit to justice” and make revelations about “his 38 -year relationship with political power in Colombia.”

The alleged “smuggling tsar” is waiting for a decision of the Supreme Court of Justice of Portugal about the possible extradition to Colombia.

Colombian media said on Friday that the Colombian prosecutor accused Marín of conspiracy to commit crimes and bribery.
