Visibly disappointed after the defeat to Frenchman Ugo Humbert (7/5, 6/3) for the Davis Cup, João Fonseca has qualified the match as a “experience” that will serve as a lesson for the future.

“I’m just an 18 -year -old boy, trying to improve my game and reach my dream. I know some matches are difficult and that nervousness will appear,” he said in an interview with journalists in Orléans, where the confrontation against France is being played.

The young tennis player also talked about the difficulty of acting on the quick floor chosen by the French team and how it has been dealing with growing popularity, after the good performances that made the eyes of the tennis world turn to him.

What is your impression on the game?
I don’t think I played badly. I did my best. Ugo played a great game. He was feeling the ball, playing aggressively. I couldn’t play my game because he was very aggressive. It happened, it was an experience. I will try to work harder and find a way in these games.

Why is it so difficult to play under these conditions, especially away from home?
The court is fast. We Brazilians were born in clay, so we need to adapt more to these circumstances. I learned and I’m still learning. It’s hard because Ugo likes to put pressure, not only in withdrawal, but in the return. He likes to make more points going to the network. When I gave some good blows, he neutralized me right away on the first ball. I couldn’t go much to the line. I was going to the line more to have more opportunities. Of course I’m sad, but I did my best, so I’m not angry with myself.

Ugo Humbert said he asked for this quick court because he feels better on her. How did you feel, having five days to train here?
At the end of the year, I played some covered court tournaments, but it’s different. I felt that it was a little faster than in other tournaments. But, yes, you need to adapt. They chose the court. Of course they have an advantage. But in five days you can adapt very well. Only today, he played better. I felt [a quadra] Very, very fast.

You even won a “white” game (four points to zero). Did that give you confidence?
It was an important game. It’s hard against these guys to make a game of zero. So it’s a game that gives you more confidence. But I got well. The games he broke me, the two games he broke me, he returned very well. I didn’t have so many opportunities in the game, I made good looting and he managed to return well. His merit. But it is to continue working to be increasingly prepared for these circumstances.

You were the most applauded Brazilian by the fans. Is it hard to deal with the pressure? How do you feel dealing with growing popularity?
I think now, after Australia and everything, I was a little better known to people. But I’m just an 18 -year -old boy, trying to improve my game and reach my dream. I know some matches are difficult and that nervousness will appear. You are not playing alone here, you are playing for a country and representing a country. But today I felt good. I’ve played three matches [de Copa Davis] by Brazil [em 2024] And I like to play under these circumstances, when the difficulty will appear and you need to face it. Today I think he played better and that’s what I can say. I am trying to work harder for the next matches.

How is this visibility for you?
I think all this media that has been happening, I think I have to adapt to all this. Things are happening. I believe I keep growing. And you have to adapt to the media, to fame, to the people talking, but you have to go with a humble head, keep working with the routine. When I am in Rio, in Brazil, to work hard to reach my dream.

Yesterday you commented on your dream of being the first in the world. How is your head now?
My head is the same. Continue working. It is being an opportunity to be here with the team. Not yet the first day. We don’t know what will happen. Following twisting to Thiago (Wild) to the duo. And then cheer for Thiago again. Let’s see how it will be. But there is nothing finished yet. We can believe. Yes, it can happen.

Everyone has an opinion about their games. What do you think yourself? And speaking more forward, what do you want?
I crave the top. I hope to play Grand Slam key, throw the key to the big tournaments. Work, maybe win titles. That’s what I want to do. My dream has always been to reach number one in the world, win Grand Slams. This is what I want. I think my game is an aggressive game. I like to go to the ball. I have courage in important moments. I think this is my differential. And I believe in that. I like the difficult times. I face them. I think this is my differential in the tennis game.
