Iran will respond immediately and decisively if its nuclear facilities are attacked, which would lead to a “total war in the region,” the Tehran Foreign Minister told TV Al Jazeera In an interview shown on Friday.
An attack from Israel and the US to Iranian nuclear facilities would be “one of the biggest historical errors the US could make,” said Araqchi Abbas through a translator.
Concerns among Iran’s decision makers that US President Donald Trump could, in his second term, give power to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities and at the same time , harden US sanctions further over its oil industry.
These concerns, along with the increase in anger in Iran regarding economic conditions, could lead Tehran to get involved in negotiations with the Trump administration about the fate of its rapid advance nuclear program.
Araqchi suggested that the United States could release Iranian funds blocked as a first stage of confidence construction between the two hostile countries.
“Iranian assets and funds were frozen at various points by the US (which) did not fulfill their previous promises (to release them). These things can be done by the US government to bring confidence between us, ”said Araqchi.
