There are news on the European disease insurance card. Know what changes

The European Disease Insurance Card (CESD) allows citizens to obtain the necessary health care during a temporary stay in another Member State of the European Union, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

This card was created to facilitate the identification of its holder and the entity responsible for the costs of health care, ensuring that it receives essential medical care without the need to return in advance to its country of origin. The type of health care provided depends on the duration of the stay and the clinical situation of the beneficiary.

Who can order the European disease insurance card?

According to, CESD can be requested by:

  • Workers covered by a social security regime;
  • People without professional activity, pensioners and their families;
  • Beneficiaries of public and private health subsystems;
  • National Health Service users who are not registered in Social Security or any health subsystem.

New functionality in direct social security

Now, the provisional certificate of replacement of CESD is now possible to obtain in direct social security.

This certificate has the same legal value as CESD and a validity of three months. It is useful for situations where the CESD holder has lost or forgotten his card, or when the entity responsible for the issuance can not make it available before the trip.

To obtain the certificate, just access the Direct social security and select the menu:
Disease> European disease insurance card> Provisional certificate.
