British Prime Minister wants to "restart" relationship with the EU but warns: "This does not imply a return" to the European bloc

Keir Strmer wants to “see a narrower relationship in defense and security, energy, trade and economy” between the United Kingdom and the European Union

British Prime Minister Keir Strmer today rejected the possibility of the United Kingdom returning to the European Union (EU) because it was decided in referendum, but defended a close relationship with the community bloc.

“Since I am a prime minister I have been very clear that I want to ‘restart’ the relationship between the United Kingdom and the EU. This does not imply a return to the European Union: here we have made a referendum (2016) about this and this question is resolved. However, I want to see a narrower relationship in defense and safety, energy, commerce and economics, and that’s what we are working on, “said Keir Stmerer.

Stmerer made these statements to the press when he received German chancellor Olaf Scholz at his field residence in Checkers on the outskirts of London to approach the war in Ukraine, the new relationship with the EU and the situation in the Middle East.

The meeting with Scholz took place three weeks before the German elections and a day before the informal dinner where Starmer will participate on Monday with the European Council leaders in Brussels, where measures will be discussed to bring the UK and EU closer.

The head of the British government, who came to power in July 2024, added that improving ties between the two parts is “the best thing for the UK” and revealed that it is also “the best thing for the EU.”

In addition, Strmer said he was animated by Monday’s dinner in Brussels and a “broader restoration of relations between the United Kingdom and the EU”.

Scholz said his visit to Checkers represents “a good sign of the very good relations between the two countries” and also between the two heads of government of Germany and the United Kingdom.

The British Prime Minister thanked the German chancellor for traveling to the United Kingdom for this “important meeting, especially when he is in the middle of an election campaign.”

“When I started as a prime minister seven months ago, I was determined to reinforce the relationship between our two countries, which was already very good, but I thought it could be stronger on several fronts,” Stmerer said.

The head of the British government admitted that the United Kingdom and Germany have a “common” view of current problems and challenges, including war in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia, and stressed that both countries have made “great advances” in science and in technology.

The two leaders had lunch in Checkers, a mansion located in Buckinghamshire County, and took a private tour of the property land before lunch.
