UNESP project, in partnership with companies and public institutions, refers to the fish produced in the city of Chavantes (SP)

Researchers from (Paulista State University) developed 2 protocols that enabled the creation of a seal of origin denomination to the tilapia fillet produced in the reservoir of the Chavantes Hydroelectric Power Plant, southwestern São Paulo, on the border with Paraná.

Held in partnerships with national and international research institutions, companies and government and with the support of FAPESP, the project was conducted in the municipality of Fartura (SP), one of 15 cities between São Paulo and Paraná bathed by the reservoir. The site was chosen because of the water regime, which remains even in periods of drought.

“The conditions of the water and climate water regime of the reservoir are some factors that enable fish production with a higher quality, in addition to animal management conditions, within the ideal parameters for the species. This factor brings distinct characteristics to the fillet ”He explained, who led the work.

The results are part of the “IoT platform for bioeconomic support capacity and ecosystem services under different climatic, zootechnical and financial scenarios of aquacular farms in a neotropical environment”, coordinated by, professor at FCAVR (Faculty of Agrarian Sciences of Vale do Ribeira) UNESP, in registration.

To validate the exclusivity of the product, the seal “Filet de Tilapia Chavantes” was created, recorded as a mixed certification brand at INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property).

The seal ensures that the product comes from a territory with unique environmental characteristics, ensuring its authenticity and value in the market. With the use of this certification, producers will be able to raise the perceived quality of their products, but also get greater competitiveness, adding value and strengthening their position in the market”Said Bueno.

Certification, according to the researcher, allows attributing elements to sustainability and innovation in the aquaculture production chain, boosting the growth of the sector and meeting the growing demands for certified and differentiated products.

Certified fillet

According to the researchers, although it has been developed taking into account the Chavantes region, the methodology can be widely applied by the tilapia industry (Oreochromis niloticus) Throughout Brazil, enabling the creation of other seals of denomination of origin.

Tilapia producers need to follow 2 protocols to submit the name of Chavantes to the INPI, detailed in one published by the researchers.

Chavantes is located between the rivers and the reservoirs of the development policy of the. The project elaborated 2 protocols, 1 fish management and another of fillet quality.

In the 1st, the ideal conditions of creation are specified, such as the number of fish per tank, nutritional composition of food and water conditions. In the 2nd, the reference values that must be achieved, obtained through chemical analysis and metabolic composition, which will define the quality of the fillet are defined.

With the data in hand, producers can make the so -called “specification notebook”, a document required by INPI for certification.

Geographical indication

The denomination of origin is one of the geographical indication seals existing in the market, an intellectual property instrument created to distinguish the origin from a particular product or service.

There are 2 types of geographical indication. One is the indication of origin, a geographical name of nation, city or region that became known as the production center of a particular product.

The other is the name of origin, used for the Chavantes reservoir. In it, the product has qualities or characteristics that should be exclusively or essentially to the geographical environment, including natural and human factors.

“Today we do not have, in Brazil, specific aquaculture protocols that assist producers to obtain these certifications of origin. Our project comes to meet a demand and still inspire other regions to do the same ”declared Camargo.
