The Algarve Platform of Confrarias (PAC) held this Sunday, February 2, in Alcoutim, the 2nd Lusophone Knowledge and Flavors Meeting in the Algarve, bringing together half a hundred confrares of 12 confraternities, which presented some of the reports representing their territories.
During the event, the first coordinating bodies of PAC were elected, highlighting Gonçalo Mesquita, from the Serra do Caldeirão Gastronomic Brotherhood, as General Coordinator, and Claudia Luz, from the Ria Formosa Marine Brotherhood, as secretary. PAC, as a regional movement, aims to strengthen the work of the confraternities in the promotion of gastronomic tourism and the valorization of the Mediterranean diet. The new coordination team has the mission of defending and promoting Algarve’s gastronomic and wine culture, supporting the region’s brotherhoods and nuclei, encouraging the creation of new confraternities – being four developing projects – auxiliary confraternities in the process of renewal and participate actively at events organized by public and private entities.
The creation of the PAC was driven by the confraternities of VRSA tuna, Serra do Caldeirão and Ria Formosa Navy, who, in June 2020, organized the first working meeting at the Memories Restaurant in Albufeira. At the time, six brotherhoods participated: Bacchus de Albufeira, VRSA tuna, Serra do Caldeirão, Ria Formosa, Liton look and Algarve gastronomers. Currently, the platform has 11 confraternities and has been recognized by several municipalities, associations and private entities of the region, which invite it to participate in events and initiatives.
PAC’s decentralized decentralized operation model will now serve as a reference for the Portuguese Federation of Gastronomic Confraternities, which intends to replicate it at the national level, highlighting the success and effectiveness of the work developed so far.
In the short term, the platform provides for working meetings with local authorities and local development associations, participate in FATACIL 2025, in Lagoa, and at the 2025 Mediterranean Diet Fair in Tavira, and is involved in the elaboration of the Algarve Gastronomic Charter.
