Georgia faces EU criticism for a hard intervention against the protesters

The head of the European Union Foreign Policy Kaja Kallasová criticized the authorities in Georgia on Sunday, where the police detain several participants in anti -government protest, including two opposition leaders. Informed AFP, writes TASR.

“The brutal intervention against peaceful protesters, journalists and politicians is unacceptable tonight tonight,” Kallas said.

In the Black Sea country, mass protests are held from the disputed elections from last October, which the opposition refused as manipulated. Critics of the government’s Georgian dream accuse her of weakening democracy and approaching Georgia to Russia. The demonstrations also prompted the November decision of the government not to open accession interviews with the EU by 2028.

Tried to block the highway

On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators tried to block the highway at the entrance to Tbilisi. The Ministry of the Interior warned that such conduct is a criminal offense for which they can impose a four -year sentence.

Police detained several persons, including the leader of the Liberal Pro -European Party Ahali Nika Melia and the former mayor of the capital Gigi Ugulava, reported AFP reporter.

Melia and Ugulava spent years in prison for allegations that human rights groups were politically motivated as politically motivated during the reign of the Georgian dreams.
