Georgia police arrested several old protesters on Sunday (2) after thousands of protesters demand new parliamentary elections. They briefly blocked a highway around the capital Tbilisi.
A Reuters reporter saw three protesters being arrested, including Nika Melia, leader of the country’s largest opposition party, the coalition for change. The former mayor of Tbilisi, Giorgi Uguulava, was also arrested, the local media said.
Suspended negotiations
Georgians have manifested themselves every night since November, when the Goorgian Dreaming Party Party said it was suspending the negotiations of joining the European Union by 2028, suddenly interrupting a longtime national goal.
The Georgian dream remained in power in a October election that, according to opposition parties, was fraudulent. The government states that the vote was fair and free.
The protests had diminished in recent weeks, but returned more strongly on Sunday, when thousands of people gathered outside a commercial complex at the far north of Tbilisi and briefly blocked the road that leads the city.
