At least 10 people were killed in a shooting at an adult education school in downtown Sweden on Tuesday (4), authorities said. The Swedish Prime Minister called a painful day to the country.
The shooter is believed to be among the injured and a search continues at school for more possible victims, a police spokesman told a press conference. The reason for the crime was not known immediately.
Police said in a statement that he had opened an investigation into attempted murder, a criminal fire and a gun crime, and a spokesman said at a press conference that police officers came across smoke when they entered the crime scene.
“When it comes to saying something more about the perpetrator, it’s still too early. The operation is underway and undoubtedly this will be clearer. But we are working intensely right now, ”local police chief Roberto Eid Forest told reporters.
The Afonbladet Diary and the SVT and TV4 broadcasters, citing anonymous sources, said “several people” were killed.

“It’s a very painful day for all of Sweden,” said Swedish Prime Minister ULF Kristersson in X.

“My thoughts are (too) with all those whose normal school day has been transformed into fear. Being locked in a classroom fearing for your life is a nightmare that no one should have to try. ”
The attack occurred in ORBRO, about 200 km west of Stockholm, at Risbergska school for adults who did not complete their formal education or did not obtain the necessary grades to continue in higher education. It is located in a campus that also houses schools for children.
Maria Pegado, 54, a school teacher, said someone opened the door of her classroom shortly after lunch break and shouted for everyone to leave.

“I took all my 15 students to the hallway and we started running,” she told Reuters by phone. “Then I heard two shots, but we managed to leave. We were near the school entrance. ”
“I saw people dragging injured out, first one, then another. I realized it was very serious, ”she said.
No police were injured in the shooting, police said. Ambulances, rescue services, and police were at the scene, a local rescue services spokesman said.

A hospital spokesman told the Reuters That of the five patients admitted to the University Hospital of Orelro, one had minor injuries and four were operated. Two of the latter left the surgery and were stable, while one had serious injuries. The spokesman said he had no information about the fourth person operated.
Police said the students were kept at school that was the target of the attack and in other nearby schools.
Sweden Minister of Justice, Gunnar Strommer, told the Reuters that the government was in close contact with the police and was closely following the events.

Sweden has been facing a wave of shootings and bomb attacks caused by an endemic gang crimes problem, although fatal attacks in schools are still rare.
Ten people were killed in seven incidents of deadly violence in schools between 2010 and 2022, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention.
In one of the crimes of the highest repercussion in the last decade, a 21 -year -old masked aggressor, acting for racist reasons, killed a teacher assistant and a boy and injured two in 2015.
