Government of autonomous territory belonging to Denmark says that measure is protection against external interference in elections
The Greenland government announced on Monday (3.FEV.2025) plans to prohibit foreign political donations. The measure, which will be evaluated by Parliament on Tuesday (4.FEV), is an attempt to protect against possible external interference in elections.
The proposal of legislation arises after statements by Donald Trump (Republican) about the acquisition of the island. The onslaught of the president of the United States generated concerns in the autonomous territory, belonging to Denmark.
The proposal prohibits political parties to receive contributions from foreign or anonymous donors and limits private contributions to 200,000 Danish crowns (R $ 160.1 thousand) in total or 20,000 Danish crowns (R $ 16,000) from a single source.
The measure is described as an effort to “Safeguard the political integrity of Greenland”. Autonomous territory authorities have been positioned in a “Open for business”although they repeatedly claim that the island is not on sale.
Any eventual arrangement with Denmark is of interest to the US. In response to Trump, Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (SocialDemokratiet, Center left), sought to consolidate European support against republican intentions.
