Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who has faced strong criticism for his relationships with Russia in recent years, is hospitalized with the diagnosis of “serious emotional burnout”. On Tuesday, the news agency DPA, which appealed to politician Hans-Peter Huber and the declaration of his attending physician for the Parliamentary Committee, reported on Tuesday, said TASR.
In his report, the doctor writes that 80-year-old Schröder suffers from “a severe burnout with typical signs of deep exhaustion and lack of energy”. It also has “difficulties in concentration and memory problems as well as sleep disturbances”.
The doctor also writes about “reduced emotional stability of the former office”. Therefore “In the foreseeable future, he will not be able to cope with the physical and mental burden in the form of a long – especially public – questioning by the investigation committee,” cited from the medical report AP.
In the summer of 2024, Schröder was summoned by a parliamentary investigation commission in the Federal Country of Mecklenburg-Predpomoransko for questioning in connection with the investigation into the activities of the MV for the protection of the climate and the environment and the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The interview was to be held in mid -January, but for Schröder’s deteriorating medical condition was canceled.
The Climate and Environment Protection Foundation was founded in January 2021 with the participation of Nord Stream 2 AG. Among its goals was to contribute to the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. However, the critics described the foundation as a fraud and claimed that it was based solely on the circumvention of US sanctions in the completion of the Nord Stream pipeline in German territory.
As Deutsche Welle recalled, representatives of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), led by Schröder, looked for the foundation. Nord Stream 2 has never been put into operation and in September 2022 it was damaged in fraudulent explosions in the Baltic Sea.
Gerhard Schröder was a German federal office between 1998 and 2005. After leaving office, the Nord Stream project operator led the board of directors. From September 2017 to May 2022 he was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russian oil company Rosneft.
For Schröder’s contacts with Russian state energy companies and His reluctance to distance himself from Russian President Vladimir Putin when Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine, It was alienated from the German political establishment.
