IP – Agriculture and Fisheries, with the support of the National Rural Network and in partnership with the Algarvio agri -food sector, launched a short video campaign that give voice to success stories in regional agriculture, highlighting investments supported by European funds and the transformation of the sector. This week presents the case of “thousand plants”, a nursery specializing in the production of citrus, olive trees and ornamental trees, which has been asserting itself as one of the main plant suppliers in the region.

The company started its activity in 2008 with the production of ornamental plants, following the growing demand in the construction sector for landscaping and green spaces. At the same time, it bet on the production of fruit trees, such as olive trees and citrus, reinforcing the response to the needs of agriculture in the Algarve.

In 2023, a thousand plants sold 67,596 fruit trees for nurseries in the region, recording a 15% growth compared to the previous year. The ordinary or sweet orange tree (Citrus sinensis) leads sales, with more than 15,000 copies per year, followed by Limoeiro and Alfepar, both with about 10,000 trees sold annually (data from the National Statistics Institute).

Regarding direct sale to farmers, there was a higher volume of sales in the subregions of the Center and Algarve Well, reinforcing the importance of this production for the dynamization of the agricultural sector in the region.
