(Folhapress) – A fire attack at a Örebro school in the center of Sweden and about 200 km west of the capital, Stockholm, left “about ten dead” on Tuesday (4), local police.

The count possibly includes the aggressor. This is the most serious incident of the type in the history of the Nordic country.

Initially, at a news conference, the authorities spoke in five injured in the action, which took place at 12:30 pm (8:30 am in Brazil). After the press mentioned the occurrence of deaths, however, a new interview with Roberto Eid Forest, head of the Örebro police, updated the picture of victims, but without confirming an exact number.

“The incident is great, so we can’t be more accurate,” said Forest. Police were still looking for victims at the scene six hours after the incident.

Of the five hospitalized patients, four were operated, and one had minor injuries, a spokesman for the University Hospital told Reuters, where victims were attended. None of them were a child.

The incident occurred at Risbergska, a school that deals especially with adult education, but divides its campus with institutions that serve children.

Police say students were kept inside the buildings, both where the shots were fired and in the nearby schools. Then students and staff began to be removed.

According to STV, the shots were made with automatic weapon. Citing the police, the Tabloid Expose said there was an exchange of police shots with the aggressor, but that no agent would have been injured.

“I heard shots, so I locked myself and I’m waiting for news. We activate an alarm in the security application and I’m communicating with my colleagues, ”said Petter Kraftling, a teacher at one of the schools, to the Swedish Teacher Union website ‘VI Larare’.

Professor Maria Pegado, 54, said someone opened the door of her classroom right after the break for lunch and shouted for everyone to leave. “I took all my 15 students to the hallway and we started running,” she told Reuters by phone.

As she left the building, she said she heard two shots. “I saw people dragging injured out, first one, then another. I realized it was very serious. ”

Police did not want to give details about the profile or age of the injured, but said the shooter is a man who possibly acted alone. “As for saying something more about the aggressor, it’s still too early.

The operation is underway and this will surely be clearer. But we are working very intensely now, ”said Forest.

The causes of the crime have not yet been clarified, but police said they have not seen, so far, “terrorist motivation.” According to the STV public broadcaster, the suspect is a 35 -year -old man whose residence is being surrounded by police. An investigation for murder, criminal fire and an aggravated weapon offense was opened.

Shortly after the shots, school images show several cars and police officers with ambulances and emergency vehicles.

On Social Network, Sweden Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the government is in contact with the police and closely monitoring events.

“It’s a very painful day for all of Sweden. My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day has been exchanged for terror. Being confined to a classroom concerned about your own life is a nightmare that no one should pass. ”

The STV public broadcaster Gunnar Strömmer, classified the news of “very serious.” Several other authorities and politicians in the country have spoken, among them the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Magdalena Andersson. “After the terrible reports of fire at a school in Örebro, my thoughts are affected, their families and the police on the spot,” he said.

Sweden has faced a wave of shootings due to the presence of gangs in the country, but attacks on schools are rare. In recent years, however, some type incidents have occurred in educational institutions.

In March 2022, for example, an 18 -year -old student stabbed and killed two teachers at a high school in the city of Malmö in the south. Two months earlier, a 16 -year -old was arrested after injuring another student and a teacher with a knife at a school in the small town of Kristanstad.

Ten people were killed in seven incidents in schools from 2010 to 2022, according to the Swedish National Crime Prevention Council.

One of the most notorious crimes of this nature in the last decade occurred in 2015, when a 21 -year -old masked aggressor, motivated by racist reasons, killed a teaching assistant and a boy and injured two other people.
