Lula exempts Marina and says he wants the oil from the equatorial margin

In an interview with radios in Minas Gerais, Petista said that Brazil needs oil to finance energy transition

The President (PT) said on Wednesday (5.FEV.2025) that Brazil wants to explore oil from the so -called equatorial margin. He also exempted the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, about the delay for environmental release for exploration research to begin.

“We want oil, because it will still exist a long time. We have to use oil so we can make our energy transition, which will need a lot of money, and we have close to us Guyana and Suriname researching oil very close to our equatorial margin and we need to make a deal ”these.

The area extends from Rio Grande do Norte and goes to Amapá, and would have great potential for oil exploration.

The operation has been locked since last year, when technicians from (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) recommended to maintain the negative to issue an environmental license for Petrobras to drill the well on site.

At a meeting on Monday morning (3.FEV) at the Planalto Palace, the petista would have committed to Senator Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP) to follow the procedures to release exploration in the region. Alcolumbre is one of the defenders of the area exploration precisely by the resources that could reach Amapá, such as royalties, for example.

In 2024, Lula that the government would explore oil from the equatorial margin region. In an interview with a Maranhão radio, the petista said that Brazil would not fail to research the area and that Petrobras had the competence necessary to do everything respecting the environment.

The president exempted Marina Silva of the delay: “And I wanted, in fact, to say this: Marina is not responsible, the responsible is that we need to do things very clearly, with a lot of study, because we have to take care of our country.”.

Lula made a point, however, to emphasize that he will be careful with the environment by exploring oil on the Amapá coast, in the Amazon River basin.

[Precisamos] Finding a solution in which we guarantee the country, the world and the equatorial margin that we will not, know, detonate any tree, nothing from the Amazon River, nothing from the Atlantic Ocean ”he declared.
