The United States exhibits a new and powerful weapon: "It seems taken from Star Wars"

The United States has been developing laser weapons systems for its army for more than a decade. What began in 2014 with the Hel MD system for armored vehicles has evolved to new power and application levels. Now, technology is also being implemented in combat planes and war ships, not only to attack enemy objectives, but to defend against drones and artillery projectiles.

Last week, the United States Navy (USN) showed images of a laser fired from the USS Preble destroyer cover. This ship, from the Arleight Burke class, has the High Energy Laser Integrated Optical-Dazzler and Surveillance (Helios) system in the bow, where the 127 mm cannon was previously located. With a power of up to 60 kW, Helios destroys drones and blinds enemy missile sensors in the flight.

Lockheed Martin installed this system in the USS Preble in 2022 and, since then, multiple tests have been carried out to verify its effectiveness in combat. One of its main advantages is that it does not need physical projectiles to shoot, since it works with electric power, which makes it a cheaper and more efficient system than traditional cannons or SM-1 interceptors missiles.

The images of the laser in action have generated astonishment. His appearance reminds Sagas as Star Wars or the animated series Gi Joe, but this technology already operates in reality. In addition to Helios, the US Navy is testing the Leonidas system, which uses microwave to use the electronic circuits of enemy weapons before they can achieve their goal.
