The US Treasury Department confirmed on Tuesday that Elon Musk’s government efficiency team received “reading” access to the “coded data” of the government’s payment system.
The payment system remains “robust and effective” and no valid request from government agencies to make payments have been rejected as a result of the team’s work, wrote Jonathan Blum, the main assistant deputy assistant of the Treasury for Legislative Affairs, in a letter to Senator Ron Wyden dated Tuesday.
Democratic legislators expressed concerns about the integrity of the system resulting from the access of the musk team.
“Treasury is committed to protecting the integrity and safety of the system, given the implications of any commitment or interruption in the US economy,” said Blum.
The letter is an answer to one that Wyden sent to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier this week, exposing his concerns that Musk’s efforts could harm the payment system.
Treasury employees working with Tom Krause, which the letter claims to be a department official, “will only have access to reading to coded data from the tax service payment system to continue” an operational efficiency assessment, said Blum.
