According to Milei government spokesman Manuel Adorni, a decision aims to end ‘delusions fueled by gender ideology’
Last Wednesday (5), the Argentine government, under the leadership of implemented significant changes in the Gender Identity Law. New guidelines prohibit minors undergoing sexual reassignment surgeries and hormonal procedures. This decision, which meets one of Milei’s campaign promises, was announced simultaneously on the country’s exit from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Manuel Adorni, the government spokesman, justified the measure by stating that the goal is to protect children’s health and end up “delusions fed by gender ideology”. He argued that such interventions can interrupt natural development and are irreversible. The previous legislation already required the authorization of a guardian and judicial approval for the realization of these procedures.
In addition to restrictions on minors, the Milei government also determined that incarcerated individuals will not be able to request a change in imprisonment based on gender identity. “This means that if a convict is in prison to men, he cannot be transferred to the arrest of women just because he says he is self-perpetuating as such,” said the spokesman. This decision reflects the intensification of the president’s conservative agenda, which has openly criticized what he considers a “Woke agenda” (pejorative term commonly used by conservatives about diversity guidelines) and opposes hormonal treatments for children.
Last weekend, the Argentine capital was the scene of major demonstrations in support of the rights of the LGBTQIA+community. Thousands of people gathered in Buenos Aires, using caps with the phrase “Make Gay Again ”, a reference to Donald Trump’s famous slogan, demonstrating resistance to the government’s new policies.
