Australia adopted strict laws against hate crimes on Thursday. They include compulsory minimum penalties for terrorist acts and depicting hate symbols. The aim is to fight the recent increase in anti -Semitism, TASR writes according to Reuters.
Laws introduce the lowest imprisonment of 12 months for less serious actions of hate than the Nazi greeting in the public, and six years after the court proven crimes of terrorism. “I want people who commit anti -Semitism to answered, accused and sent to prison,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was originally against the lowest sentence, told Sky News.
The Government Bill on Hate Crimes of Hate discussed the Parliament for the first time last year. He created new categories of crimes for threatening people by force or by force based on their race, religion, nationality, national or ethnic origin, political views, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.
In recent months, Australia has escalated attacks on the synagogue, building and vehicles of members of the Jewish community. In Sydney, for example, they found a caravan filled with explosives and a list of Jewish goals. The center -right opposition party criticized Albanese for having a weak attitude against crime and does not deal with an increase in anti -Semitism.
Minister of Interior Tony Burke said that changes in penalties mean to the creation of “the hardest laws ever had Australia against crimes of hate”. Most of the attacks took place in the Union State New South Wales, whose officials announced on Wednesday that they will also tighten the laws of hateful speeches under legislation, which already applies to West Australia and Victoria.
