Folhapress – Guatemala President Bernardo Arévalo said the country will accept 40% more deportation flights from the United States, both with Guatemalas and immigrants from other nationalities.

The statement was given after Arévalo meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on Wednesday (5).

During a news conference alongside Arévalo, Rubio said he had promised US support for the Central American’s efforts to repact people who are not from Guatemala to their home countries.

Washington’s main diplomat, who turns to Central America to discuss migration on his first trip abroad in office, said the offer of Arévalo to increase the number of flights accepted by Guatemala was “very important to us in terms of the situation migratory we are facing. ”

“His willingness to accept not only nationals, but also those of other nationalities while ultimately seeking to return to their own countries, it is also important, and we promise our support for these efforts,” said the American.

The details of the increase in flights will be discussed in working groups to be established, said Arévalo. No details have been informed of how Guatemala will deal with deported from other countries – the country has repatriated guatemalatec reception programs.

The president of the Central American country also said that accepting criminals was not discussed at the meeting with Rubio, after neighboring El Salvador offered, on Monday (3) shelter in his “dangerous criminal” arrests from anywhere in the world deported by the world USA.

The price for El Salvador would be a “relatively low rate for the US, but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable,” the country’s president Nayib Bukele said on social network.

The leader called the offer of an “opportunity to externalize” part of his penitentiary system.

In addition to facilitating the way for Washington to send migrants back to their own countries, Rubio, in their visits this week, sought to secure agreements from which nations welcome citizens from other countries who do not accept deported.

Cuba and Venezuela, for example, have cold relations with the US and in the past have limited the number of deporteds they accept, although Trump management says that Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro agreed to accept the citizens of his country back.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump has increased the number of migrants that the US deports to Latin America, including the use of military aircraft for repatriation flights.

Republican management removed the protection against hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans in the US earlier this week in the United States from the country from a temporary special status granted during the Joe Biden government.

The new US government also decided to expand installation at the Guantanamo base, in the southern island of Cuba, so that the site can house about 30,000 migrants. Washington started deportation flights to the base on Tuesday (4).

Other countries have adopted deportation policies in recent years, although with differences related to the Trump government.

In late January, Italy resumed the sending of rescued immigrants at the high seas to Albania, with a vessel with 49 of them.

The controversial anti-immigration program seeks to keep refuge applicants in the country across the adriatic sea while the processes are analyzed.

During the government of Conservative Rishi Sunak in the United Kingdom, the British government approved in Parliament a project that did the same with refuge applicants, but sending them to the distant Rwanda in Africa.

Upon taking over the post, the current prime minister, the labor Keir Stmerer, ended the program.
