Allies of the governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes (), see chances of the manager’s alliance with the PL aimed at those of 2026 in the state.
Mendes is quoted to play the Senate next year, when two vacancies per state will be at stake.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro’s party wants to launch the federal deputy and former senator José Medeiros to the Senate.
The local PL, however, has signaled that can launch its own candidacy for the state government. But parliamentarians close to Mendes bet that it is possible to sign an alliance with the Bolsonaro party through articulations by the national PL summit, securing a place for the governor and another for one nominee of the former president in the Senate dispute. In this scenario, Mauro would choose the candidate for the government.
The governor’s interlocutors say that PL President Valdemar Costa Neto has more pragmatic than ideological stance.
On the other hand, a wing of the state PL has caveats to Mauro Mendes, as they do not see the governor committed to support Bolsonarist guidelines from 2027, such as the impeachment of ministers of the Supreme Court, if elected.
In the state, several PL mayors are allies of Mauro Mendes. In, the governor supported the current mayor Abílio Brunini (PL) in the second round of the mayor’s election, which was seen as a sign of rapprochement after the head of the Paiaguá Palace had launched União Brasil’s own candidacy in the first round.
Mendes’s surroundings often point out that, despite being from the right, Governor Mato Grosso is a moderate politician.
A possible obstacle to a Union-PP alliance in Mato Grosso is the eventual candidacy of the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (Union), to the presidency, in a different stage from the PL.
