It is in advanced negotiations to purchase AMPERE, sources said familiar with the matter.

The Japanese company is discussing an agreement that could evaluate the chip designer supported by Oracle () by about $ 6.5 billion, including debts, according to sources. A transaction may be announced in the coming weeks, they said.

A Bloomberg News Last month reported that softbank and chips designer, which is mostly controlled by Softbank, expressed interest in an AMPERE acquisition.

Although negotiations are at an advanced stage, they can still be postponed or fail, the sources said, who asked not to be identified when discussing confidential information. AMPERRE, ARM and Softbank representatives refused to comment.

A deal for AMPERE, whose first investors also include the Private Equity Carlyle fund, would add to a wave of chip companies that seek to capitalize on an artificial intelligence spending boom. Oracle said last year that it has 29% of AMPERE and can exercise future investment options that would give it control of the company.

AMPERE, which manufactures Data Center machines processors using ARM technology, was valued at more than $ 8 billion in a minority investment proposed by Japan softbank in 2021, as reported by Bloomberg News at the time. But the chip market has become more competitive since then, with several major technology companies running to develop the same types of products that AMPERE manufactures.

This Wednesday (5), the ARM gave a cautious forecast of revenue, increasing the concern that spending on AI computing are decreasing. The company expects a revenue of $ 1.18 billion to $ 1.28 billion in the fourth fiscal quarter, which extends until March.

Perspectives follow AMD’s disappointing forecast earlier this week, arousing fears that the expanding market for AI hardware is now on more unstable terrain. Chinese startup Deepseek, which revealed an economy model of AI produced last month, has raised the possibility that technology providers will not generate as much revenue as expected.
