Members of the European Parliament (EP) will discuss the development of media freedom and the state of the rule of law in Slovakia, the next Wednesday in Strasbourg, informs TASR.

MEPs together with the EU Council and the European Commission first plan to assess the state of media freedom throughout the Union, focusing on a possible measure for the protection of journalists. In this context, the EP is about to draw attention to the calls related to the recently adopted European legislation – the Freedom of Media (EMFA) Regulation, the Directive against strategic action to restrict public participation (SLAPP) and the Digital Services Regulation (DSA).

MEPs “are likely to focus on the recent threat to the values ​​of the European Union in general and on the development in Slovakia separately after they expressed serious concerns about the state of the rule of law in the country in January 2024,” the official website of the EP says. scheduled for Wednesday 12 February in the afternoon.

In Brussels at the end of January, a monitoring group for democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights (DRFMG), which was devoted to the current development of events in the Slovak Republic in the area of ​​the rule of law, met in Brussels. According to TASR, the largest EP fractions suggest that the first MEP monitoring mission from the EP Committee on Civil Freedom, Justice and Home Affairs (Libe) go to Slovakia.
